Inequality is an impediment in national development. There is a need for inclusive growth that is pro-poor and the goals of growth and reduction in inequality need to be achieved simultaneously..

The writer is rueful that there is no social justice in Pakistan. The basic structure of the society has remained unchanged since independence. The privileged classes, mostly about 460 affluent clans, have ruled the legislatures. They presume that they have the divine right to protect their own turfs. Unfortunately, the passive Pakistani people are not motivated to initiate a social movement to change their lot. They are unaware of their rights. The writer reminds that even dine rules could be removed by use of force if they fail to deliver the goods. No ruler, even a king, is clothed with absolute authority.

There is now a well-established critique that GDP alone does not capture human welfare quite well on its own. There is a need for a broader canvas to convey the meaning of people-centred development. Thanks to renowned Pakistani economist Dr Mahbub-ul-Haq, we have been seeing the UNDP Human Development Reports since 1990 based on the Human Development Index that ranks countries in the world on the basis of their performance on social indicators.

Global right wing populism and the rise of Tehreek-e-Labbaik in Pakistan
It is interesting to see TLP go from political obscurity to the third largest party in Punjab in the 2018 elections
From the US to India to Eastern Europe, hate seems to be a word in vogue. The rise of Trump in the US and the successive governments of Narendra Modi in India are glaring examples of the power of politics of division, xenophobia and anger. In England, Brexit represented the division and anger which permeates the global socio economic and political fabric. In Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, right wing governments openly espouse Islamophobic rhetoric to enforce anti-immigration laws and to cover up their own shortcomings. In Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro carries the flag of far-right populism with his bigoted views on race and gender.
