“We have placed an order for 13 million doses of the Russian Sputnik vaccine,” she said.
The minister added that 8.4 million doses of the AztraZeneca vaccine through the World Health Organization’s COVAX facility, and 5 million Pfizer-BioNtech vaccines will be imported this year.
“We possess the ability to fully vaccinate more than 60% of our total population before the end of this year,” Wanniarachchi noted.

This statement comes amid growing criticism of the Chinese vaccine
China`s Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine will not be given to Sri Lankans until the safety aspect of the vaccine is ensured by the health authorities, the country`s Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has said.
In response to questions raised by the Opposition, Pavithra told the Sri Lankan Parliament on Thursday that their regulatory authority had been analyzing data on the vaccine to ensure the safety of the vaccine, Daily Mirror reported.
