The 28-year-old resident of Soké, Mali, and mother of four visited her local community health center for routine checkups, or antenatal care, throughout her pregnancy. Here, during four separate visits and under the supervision of a maternity health worker, she took antimalaria pills as part of a process known as intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (IPTp).

The award is also for Speak Up Africa to celebrate journalists who have demonstrated exemplary leadership that have brought about a positive impact through their work and initiatives. Speaking to this medium about the planned awards, Health Reporters Network President, Swaliho Vandi said the award is to recognize media practitioners who continue to raised awareness and drive action around important public health issues such as malaria, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), immunization, sanitation, and COVID-19.

Kaine The World Health Organization’s (WHO) World Malaria Report 2020, which is posted on their website, reveals that Sierra Leone in recent times has one of the world’s highest burdens of malaria cases – accounting for an estimated 6,824 deaths (or roughly 2% of all malaria deaths recorded globally) in 2019. According to the Government of Sierra Leone’s own ‘Malaria Control Strategic Plan (2016-2020)’, malaria is endemic in Sierra Leone and transmission has been recorded in all areas of the country. At the time of the plan’s publication (in late 2015), malaria accounted for 40.3% of outpatient morbidity for all ages, and it accounted for 37.6% of all hospital admissions in the country.
