When Sarah Hamilton, owner of New Roots Farm at Canon City, wanted to start an online store, she turned to a comprehensive report from the National Young Farmers Coalition to help sort through the options.
“I wanted something free or really low cost, because I didn’t anticipate it being a huge part of our sales,” she said during the annual Oklahoma Fruit and Vegetable Growers Conference earlier this year. “But I’ve learned there really is a place for online sales in our day and age.”
It’s now been over a year since the first pandemic lockdowns upended the marketplace, but as analysts and researchers continue to monitor the long-term impacts to food and agriculture, one emerging consensus is that online food purchasing has accelerated and will probably remain high in the future.
Guide helps independent supermarkets get up and running with SNAP EBT for online grocery services
The National Grocers Association (NGA) has launched the SNAP Online Purchasing Toolkit, a guide to help independent grocers accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) electronic benefit transfer (EBT) payments online.
NGA said yesterday that the SNAP Online Purchasing Toolkit streamlines the process to accept SNAP online purchasing as a payment that independent supermarkets can support. The kit provides detailed information on the SNAP online purchasing requirements retailers must meet to participate in the program; tips and instructions for setting up, including a breakdown of scenarios retailers may encounter beforehand; and best practices.
Pandemic impact, key grocery industry issues headline virtual conference
FMI-The Food Industry Association and the National Grocers Association (NGA) today led food and grocery industry stakeholders in meetings with lawmakers from Congress at the 2021 Day in Washington.
FMI and NGA said Wednesday that the virtual event drew more than 230 supermarket retailers and wholesalers from 143 companies and food industry state association executives nationwide. Members from both associations connected online with members of Congress and legislative staff in over 220 meetings to advocate for key policy issues affecting the supermarket sector.
This year, the impact of the COVID-19 crisis and the grocery industry’s response and community support topped the list of policy discussions with congressional officials, FMI and NGA noted.
