UN body praises Oman for successful conduct of electronic census By: ONA Muscat: The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) has praised the efforts of the National Center for Statistics   and Information for the successful conduct and implementation of the electronic census of population, housing and establishments 2020 based on administrative records.  The UN body also praised the speedy publication of its results in record time, despite the exceptional circumstances that afflicted the world in 2020, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19). More than 6,000 Omanis lose jobs in 2020

Dubai: More than 6,000 Omani workers have lost their jobs in Oman in 2020, according to a new report published by the country’s workers union. The annual report published by the General Federation of Oman Workers Union (GFOW) revealed that a total of 6,341 Omani workers were notified about the termination of service from 120 companies last year. The report attributed the surge in the number of people losing their jobs to the repercussions of the continuing global decline in oil prices, as well as the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on the companies, which led to the closure of many during the outbreak.

Encourage Omanis to work in private sector

By: Times News Service The differences in privileges between public and private sectors have already been reduced, and more efforts are underway. Muscat: To encourage more nationals to enter the private sector, efforts are on to match the minimum wages given to public sector employees with those at private sector, a senior official of Ministry of Labour said. Omanis joining the private sector will find good opportunities for growth, and will learn plenty of skills hands-on that will benefit them throughout their careers. “We have plans to train, qualify and prepare nationals to take up senior and mid-level roles in the private sector,” said a Ministry of Labour official. “This was part of the implementation plan announced by the ministry as part of its executive plan for 2021, which was made public last January.
