Early Cambridge buildings remain intact underground
Preservation is key, as the underground storefronts are believed to be one of only three sets in the country
Underneath Ellie s Cottage, at 653 Wheeling Ave., is a hidden gem of Cambridge history.
Those who have had the opportunity to step through the white door in the back of Ellie s, have experienced walking down a narrow flight of steps that led them back in time.
At the bottom of those steps are the original storefronts built sometime around the 1840s.
The still-intact buildings and sidewalks, which have come to be known as Cambridge Underground, were discovered during the Wheeling Avenue construction/streetscape project in 2011.
The bridge that spans the Arkansas River immediately east of Johnson Village is one of 46 bridges throughout the state to be named by the Colorado Department of Transportation on this yearâs list of Colorado Preservation, Inc.âs Most Endangered Places.
The nomination represents the first phase of a study of Coloradoâs historical bridges to identify structures CDOT will commit to preserving in place.
The bridge that carries U.S. Highway 24-285 from Trout Creek Pass over the Arkansas to Johnson Village, a Pratt deck truss bridge built in 1937, is one of two bridges named in the list in Chaffee County. The other also crosses the river north of Salida on Colo. 291.
