Government to establish feedlots at regional level

As the demand for Uganda’s beef across the world continues to rise due to our organic production systems as well as unique genetics and the favourable environment, government has embarked on efforts to create community feedlots to increase production, writes Ernest Jjingo.
On the Masaka-Mbarara highway alone, three major abattoirs have set up in a space of one year. One of them, Zhong Wu Beef Importers and Exporters Group, opened business in February and much as it is impressed with the quality of local beef, the response of the farmers is still underwhelming.

Government, through the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Databank (NAGRC&DB) is in final stages of introducing the Toggenburg goat breed for adoption in Uganda.
At least 1,000 breeding goats are expected to be imported from Switzerland before the end of the year.
The arrangement, which has already been budgeted for in this financial year, will see livestock-rearing communities and commercial goat farmers availed the goats mostly for purposes of dairy milk rich in nutrients required for boosting the human immune system.

Summary
In Uganda, dairy goat farming was first promoted in 2003 in the districts of eastern districts of Mbale, Sironko, Bududa, Manafwa and Kapchorwa by FARM Africa, an international non-governmental organisation working with poor communities.
