The National Animal Genetic Resources Center and Databank (NAGRC&DB) has finalised plans to introduce highly-efficient and productive dairy goats for adoption by the livestock-rearing communities to avail milk rich in nutrients required for boosting the human immune system.
This is revealed in a new report about the state of goat farming in the country. Dr Peter Beine, the NAGRC&DB acting executive director, confirmed the development but did not provide the specific timeframe for the start.
“On the recommendation of our scientists and researchers, we are bringing the Toggenburg breed, a dairy goat that has been found to withstand conditions here,” he noted.

Last week’s media tour of the expansive Kasolwe stock farm in Kamuli was an eye-opening experience of modern farming methods that have been brought close to the rural farmers in an elaborate style right from inception to marketing produce. ERNEST JJINGO highlights the best farming practices.
The four-hour journey to Kasolwe stock farm was a gruelling one characterized by potholes on the road and sights of people in despair.

The livestock industry is fundamental to Uganda’s economy. The sector contributes 13.1 per cent of the agricultural gross domestic product (GDP) and 5 per cent of the national GDP.
The importance of livestock is set to rise further, as growing incomes lead to higher meat consumption. For example, the 2020 annual agricultural survey by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), indicates that demand for beef in Uganda is expected to increase by more than 150 per cent between 2020 and 2040.

A row has erupted between locals and government officials managing Aswa ranch in Angagura Sub-county, Pader District.
Aswa Ranch is among the state-owned ranches in the country, where some 1,300 cattle are being bred under the management of National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB).
In 2017, the Ministry of Agriculture through NAGRC&DB availed 1,300 animals (Ankole breed) to the ranch and upon multiplication they would be given to the communities in the region so that they can improve their livelihood through animal keeping.
