The building was not equipped with a fire sprinkler system. According to fire officials, three residents are now in critical condition, including a man with second- and third-degree burns. The other five victims suffered minor smoke inhalation.

Aliza and Carson Devoe were granted the funding in light of the death of their father, Lt. Dennis Devoe, who died on the way to a March 2017 house fire caused by a hoverboard. Devoe was headed to a fire on the 2500 block of Lexington Street when an impaired driver ran a stop sign and T-boned him at 14th and Walnut streets, police said. Two girls died in the fire.

On Thanksgiving this year, the National Fire Protection Association said fire departments nationwide responded to 1,630 home cooking fires – about 3.5 times higher than an average day. With an increase in cooking and the possibility of fires from Christmas tree and lights, they are bracing for a busy end of the year.
