BHS Students to receive COVID-19 vaccine

The clinic will take place at BHS on April 28, 2021. BHS students who are 16 years of age on or before April 28th are eligible to receive the vaccine at this event. This is a two-dose vaccine and the 2nd dose will be given at BHS on May 19. A parent/guardian of the student must complete a form to be returned to the Burlington School Office by Friday, April 23rd in order for the student to participate in the clinic. The Henderson County, Illinois, Public Health Department has canceled its April 21 Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine clinic amid concerns over the vaccine s safety.  The cancellation came on the heels of recommendations from the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control that the U.S. pause administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after six women between the ages of 18 and 48 experienced blood clots and low platelet counts after receiving the single-dose vaccination.  We will not be hosting (the vaccine clinic) as scheduled due to there being recommended pause by federal health authorities to not use it until more research has been done into the issues that have presented in six women ages 18 to 48 who have had blood clotting and problems with low blood platelet counts, Henderson County Public Health Emergency Response Coordinator Sharon

Des Moines County health official thanks volunteers for vaccine help

The Hawk Eye Des Moines County Public Health Administrator Christa Poggemiller said COVID-19 vaccination efforts have been hugely successful, largely thanks to coordination from local entities. I want to thank all of the other agencies Great River Health System, Emergency Management and all of the volunteers, Poggemiller said. Poggemiller told the Des Moines County Board of Supervisors at its Tuesday meeting that, as of Tuesday morning, 12,100 county residents had gotten at least one shot. While Johnson & Johnson has gotten Food and Drug Administration approval for a single-shot vaccine, Poggemiller said it is unlikely the county will get it. Most of the vaccines Des Moines County has gotten have been from Pfizer, but Poggemiller said Moderna vaccines may be coming soon.

Iowans with pre-existing conditions can receive COVID-19 vaccines

The Hawk Eye More Iowans now are eligible to get their COVID-19 vaccines thanks to a change to phase 1B announced Thursday by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds. Starting Monday, people with pre-existing health conditions will be able to get the vaccines, said Christa Poggemiller, administrator of Des Moines County Public Health. Previously, phase 1B only included those 65 and older, but Reynolds announced Thursday the group will be expanded to those between the ages of 16 and 64 with pre-existing conditions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 12 health conditions proven to cause complications and another 12 that are suspected to cause complications.
