NEW DELHI: Though the chances of an impact of the new variant of COVID-19 in the country seem slim, experts do not completely rule out the possibility of infections owing to it.
“We cannot exclude the possibility of the new variant not having been carried on to other countries. The new variant has been around for about two months. So there’s a high possibility of the new variant having already spread out there has been a movement in the past one month. But we are more aware of it,” said Dr Lalit Kant, former Scientist and Head (Epidemiology and. Communicable Diseases Division), ICMR.

Migrant workers are suspected of being the source of the spread of Covid-19 in Samut Sakhon, as three close relatives of an infected shrimp wholesaler in the province have also tested positive for the virus.
Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said that officials may have to trace and test up to 10,000 people in the area to find out how the woman contracted the virus.

As many as three family members of a 67-year-old shrimp vendor at Samut Sakhon market were diagnosed positive after she reported symptoms of the COVID-19. According to Bangkok’s local agency TNA, the woman reported a loss of smell and fatigue and was moved to a healthcare facility in the province. At least 18 others came in contact with the woman after health authorities initiated testing ad tracing.
