Minnesota Southeast grad returns to help students in Red Wing, Winona meet basic needs

RED WING, Minn. (WKBT) Akilah Childs was a BPOC when she was a student at Minnesota College Southeast, and she’s back as a big person on campus again, as well as on the college’s Winona campus.
Childs, who graduated from the college’s Early Child Education program in 2016, was on the Red Wing school’s Student Senate, served as a peer tutor, helped plan campus-wide events and assisted Student Services with recruiting and admissions.
This Wednesday, March 24 at 7:00 p.m. the Florida Gulf Coast University Center for Critical Race and Ethnic Studies is hosting a virtual presentation called “The Black Lives Matter Movement: Insurgent Intersectionality and Radical Inclusivity in the Twenty-First Century.” It’s presented by Dr. Reiland Rabaka, Professor of African, African American, and Caribbean Studies in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder.His presentation will provide an overview of the historical roots, core principles, political critiques, and social commentary of the Black Lives Matter Movement, particularly how the movement is grounded in, and grew out of, the black radical feminist tradition in the U.S.

Students learn about agriculture and nutrition at community center
Even as most Clarke County schools remain online only, students in East Athens are learning about agriculture and nutrition through an in-person, hands-on University of Georgia program offered at a neighborhood community center.
UGA’s Grow It Know It (GIKI) program, a collaboration with Clarke County middle schools, is now offered two afternoons a week at the the East Athens Community Center. About 15 students, from second through sixth grade, have participated in the program run by the Office of Service-Learning, a UGA Public Service and Outreach unit.

The Blue Earth Economic Development Authority started off 2021 with a look at several new ideas for the new year.
One of the top discussions centered on adding onto the Golden Spike Business Park on the north side of the city. Currently there are two lots in phase 1 of the park, with one of those having a purchase agreement in place.
The EDA board discussed the opportunities to expand the park, either to the south or the west of the current phase 1 area.
