IT Carlow s governing body approves application to merge with Waterford IT

Waterford, Ireland / WLR Apr 29, 2021 5:18 PM The Technological University for the South East looks set to go ahead now as both governing bodies of IT Carlow and Waterford IT have approved the merger. A key meeting of Carlow’s governing body was held today where they gave the go-ahead to proceed, after Waterford did the same on Tuesday. That’s despite Waterford IT’s TUI members voting against it last Friday. Today’s decision paves the way for the application to be lodged tomorrow. An international panel will examine the application and if approved the Technological University for the South East could be formed from January 1st.

APPLICATION FOR TUSE TO GO TO THE MINISTER AS IT CARLOW SIGNS UP A university for the south east could be formed as early as January next year after the governing bodies of Waterford and Carlow Institutes of Technology voted in favour of the move. IT Carlow approved the decision today paving the way for an application to be lodged with Minister Simon Harris tomorrow. An international panel will examine the application and if approved the Technological University for the South East could be formed from January 1st. Declan Doyle, Vice President of IT Carlow, says the move has been a long time coming:

€27 6m for transformative projects for Waterford city centre

Waterford Council has been granted €27.6m by the government to rejuvenate the city centre. The money will be spent across a total of 22 projects around the city centre in the wider Viking Triangle & Cultural Quarter areas. The funding, which is the full amount applied for, is being allocated from the second round of the government’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) and follows on from the €110 million for the North Quays last November. Waterford Fine Gael Senator John Cummins described the funding as ‘transformative’ and said the total investment will be in the region of €48.5 million: “Today is a further watershed day and again demonstrates the government’s commitment to Waterford in the context of Project Ireland 2040. Waterford City and County Council received every cent of funding they requested of government and in reality the state investment will be far in excess of €27.6 because a number of the projects contained in the plan
