Cummins welcomes Tánaiste’s comments favouring Waterford City as site for new university HQ

Comments from the Tánaiste that he is strongly of the view that the Technological University for the South East should be centred in Waterford is positive news for the county, Fine Gael Senator John Cummins has said.
Speaking in the Dáil today, Fine Gael Leader and Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said he was a great supporter of a technological university for the south east and strongly of the view that the proposed technological university for the south east should be centred in Waterford city and some available sites there should be used to expand the university further.

There are calls for the Minister for Higher Education to meet with Councillors in Waterford about the Technological University for the South East.
The application for TU designation is expected to be submitted by WIT and IT Carlow at the end of April, however, a decision on where its headquarters will be will not be made until next year.
Independent Councillor Mary Roche says we need commitment instead of promises. She wants an invite to be extended to Minister Simon Harris as well as the President of WIT Willie Donnelly.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris has re-affirmed Government’s commitment to a Technological University for the South East.
Minister Harris was speaking at a new Regional Engagement Advisory Group, attended by Presidents of IT Carlow and WIT and business leaders for the area.
“It is a significant priority for Government, myself as Minister and my Department that the South-East attains technological university status this year, he said.
