Steve Gaer was raised to believe in the importance of public service. The fourth-generation West Des Moines resident and four-term mayor grew up going to city council meetings with his father, who was elected to an at-large seat in 1967 when Gaer was 7 years old. He remembers one night when a resident knocked on his family s door mad about a project on 19th Street. Gaer asked his father why he served, why he put up with people who were mad at him for one thing or another.

Mediacom Communications Files Lawsuit Against City of West Des Moines

Posted on 382 MCC Iowa LLC, a subsidiary of Mediacom Communications Corporation, has filed a petition for declaratory judgment and injunction against the City of West Des Moines and the West Des Moines City Council. The petition alleges the West Des Moines City Council improperly used taxpayer-backed financing bonds intended to remedy urban blight and poverty to build a $50 million city-wide conduit network for the exclusive use of one internet service provider. Filed in Iowa District Court for Polk County, the petition outlines seven specific violations of the law and requests West Des Moines suspend activities related to the conduit network.
