Yang filed papers with the New York City Campaign Finance Board Wednesday to join the race. Yang, a CNN commentator following his run for president, now arguably has the highest national profile of any of the candidates. The former ambassador for global entrepreneurship under President Barack Obama has not officially announced his run. Yang grew up in Westchester County, went to law school at Columbia and began his legal career in New York City.

Yang registered a committee with the Campaign Finance Board on Wednesday, allowing him to begin raising funds, according to CFB spokesperson Matt Sollars. He also opted into CFB’s 8-to-1 matching funds program that allow registered voters in New York City to contribute a maximum of $250 to a campaign that can then be matched eight times that amount. This could stretch small-dollar contributions to a maximum of $2,000, reducing corporate influence in elections.

Yang filed the paperwork after a poll earlier this week found him leading among Democratic contenders for mayor, garnering 17 percent among likely Democratic voters. Only Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams approached Yang s support in the poll, although about 40 percent of voters were undecided and the poll s candidates did not include outgoing Rep. Max Rose (D-N.Y.), who has announced a bid of his own.
