It’s spring, and each year this season brings - in addition to daffodils, light evenings and the Easter Bunny - the Taxpayers Alliance’s annual whinge about local government salaries. The alliance’s Town Hall Rich List is based like its predecessors on recording how much senior council staff are paid, but not what they do, whether they give good value, what has happened to the authority’s overall pay bill, or what its council tax increase is, let alone any comparison with prvate sector pay for work of equivalent responsibility. There is a ritualistic quality to the list - it highlights a few high salaries, the Sun and Daily Mail fulminate to order and then everyone forgets it until next year.
