The Kansas City, Missouri, Board of Police Commissioners has requested that Mayor Quinton Lucas withdraw ordinances that reallocate $42 million from the police department.
Alleging Mayor Quinton Lucas and other city officials “defaulted on their duties,” the board is seeking a quick stop to implementation of the plan because it says it violates state law.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. â The Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners has filed suit against Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas, other city officials and KCMO itself over police budget ordinances recently passed.
The ordinances reallocate more than $42 million from the Kansas City Police Department into a new, locally administered community services fund the police department could access.
Filed Friday, the lawsuit calls the measures âdefundingâ the police and âefforts to hinder and obstruct the Boardâs management and control of the police departmentâs budget, in violation of state law.â

The Board of Kansas City Police Commissioners, the five-member board appointed by the Missouri governor to supervise police in Kansas City, met privately at a previously unscheduled meeting on Monday to discuss legal matters. While commissioners didn t comment directly on the talks, they gave indications that a lawsuit was under consideration.
