The Downtown Development Review Board on July 15 approved the exterior design for AXIS Hotels LLC’s estimated $17.6 million renovation of the historic Ambassador Hotel. The board voted 5-0 to grant AXIS final design approval for what the developer says will be a 100-room TRYP by Wyndham hotel in the 98-year-old building at 420 N. Julia St. The hotel also will have a restaurant and lounge. Bryan Greiner, president of AXIS parent company Augustine Development Group LLC, said the restaurant will be a “SoHo concept” with an “industrial vibe.” Greiner said the lounge will be a small speakeasy and wine cellar. The restaurant will be operated by Doral-based Victory Hospitality LLC owner Mark Mughabghab.

Developer: Crews to start demolishing the top of Berkman II | Jax Daily Record | Jacksonville Daily Record

The owner of the unfinished Berkman Plaza II Downtown says that demolition crews will begin removing the upper floors of the structure July 9.  Jacksonville Riverfront Revitalization LLC said in a news release July 8 that delivery of a high-reach excavator to the 500 East Bay St. site over the Fourth of July weekend will allow Orlando-based contractor Pece of Mind Environmental Inc. to begin the work. Pece of Mind President Steve Pece said the company has been removing steel and other debris from the 18-story structure and preparing the site for the crane’s arrival since May.  “The demolition is expected to take three to four months, weather permitting,” he said in the release.
