The spread of COVID-19 cases in the county has created the need for the Osawatomie Volunteer Fire Department to assist a neighboring department with its calls.
âEffective last night, we added the Osawatomie Fire Department to all responses within the Fontana Fire Department area due to COVID concerns with their staff,â Mark Whelan told county commissioners during a county fire board meeting Wednesday, Dec. 9.
The Board of County Commissioners also serves as the fire board.
âThis way we can ensure we do get a timely response to any fire or EMS calls in Fontanaâs area,â said Whelan, emergency management coordinator at the Miami County Sheriffâs Office. âWeâre hoping that will clear in the next couple of weeks. Once Fontana is back up to their normal staffing, weâll switch it back to Fontana taking care of their own calls unless they call for help.â

As coronavirus infections grew exponentially in Missouri in the fall, many hospital leaders found themselves in the unusual position of explaining that the official state data about their bed space was wrong.
Though Missouri’s data showed that hospitals had plenty of beds available for patients, the numbers were inflated for months, in part because many hospitals themselves failed to follow reporting guidelines.
An analysis by KCUR found that the data remained uncorrected for weeks even after hospital doctors warned they had reached a critical point, leaving local leaders scrambling to respond after hospitals were nearly full. The data is used to determine local stay-at-home restrictions as well as gauge how hospitals are faring during the pandemic.

Missouri s COVID-19 dashboards exaggerated the numbers of beds available to treat patients, even after doctors said the data was misleading.
Even as hospital leaders warned that their beds were nearly full and Gov. Mike Parson assured the public that the state was prepared some hospitals continued to report data that made their capacity appear larger than it was.
