This is the latest in a series of horrific car bombs and other improvised explosive devices that have killed dozens of civilians and injured many more in northern Syria in recent months. The humanitarian colleague who was killed yesterday was a community health worker of a UN-funded health project in Al-Bab providing services for people affected by COVID-19. A driver and a co-worker were injured in the attack.

The fighting is threatening to trigger a new wave of displacement and heighten already dire levels of humanitarian need. Before this escalation, there were already about 1 million internally displaced people in Marib. Yemen remains the world’s worst humanitarian crisis and is at risk of slipping into large-scale famine. Now is the time to de-escalate the violence in Marib and everywhere else – not to add to people’s suffering.
