Daily Noon Briefing Highlights – 21 January 2021
Syria
Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc on vulnerable people throughout Syria. As of 21 January, flooding in the north-west has impacted nearly 22,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and resulted in one death and three injuries. In the north-west, 88 IDP sites were affected, and almost 1,400 tents were destroyed and another 2,700 tents were damaged. Heavy rainfalls have also impacted IDPs elsewhere in the country, including in southern rural Tartous, where families have been forced to relocate.
Across Syria, an estimated one in three of the 6.7 million IDPs lives in inadequate shelters, including damaged and unfinished buildings, and public buildings such as schools. Nearly 4 million people live in inadequate shelters in areas with high elevation and snowfall, including in Rural Damascus.
