CASEY: Since November, Roanoke nurse has been waiting for unemployment benefits

Mitsi Studebaker is 61 years old. Since she was 28, the Roanoke woman has worked as a nurse. In November she was working for a private-duty agency inside the home of a disabled 3-year-old girl. “She had been real sick that day and actually stopped breathing,” Studebaker said Friday. “She went to the hospital. The next morning the mother texted me that [the little girl] had COVID.” So did Studebaker, who said she began developing symptoms a day or two later, around Nov. 17. She tested positive, too. The little girl recovered. But obviously, Studebaker couldn’t work while she was herself infected. So she temporarily left her job at that time, and filed a claim with the Virginia Employment Commission for pandemic-related unemployment benefits.

Reynolds CEO impressed with local employees resiliency, flexibility during pandemic

Guy Meldrum has not meant to keep a lower profile in his first six months as president and chief executive of Reynolds American Inc. However, the combination of international travel restrictions amid the COVID-19 pandemic and becoming acquainted with British American Tobacco Plc s largest subsidiary has kept his availability limited since September. Before becoming BAT s second appointment at the helm of Reynolds, Meldrum served as regional director of its Asia-Pacific and Middle East division. Joe Biden set a cautiously optimistic tone as he laid out virus recovery goals in his first prime time address 50 days into his presidency, and shortly after signing a historic $1.9 trillion dollar pandemic relief package.

One year later: What we learned from a pandemic

If you could go back one year, what would you have done differently? If I could go back one year, I would be sure to tell my students how much I love them and show them how strong and smart they are. One of the biggest struggles last spring was how lonely and isolated my first-graders felt. They were scared of COVID, but I think even more so they missed their friends and teachers. They really need that personal human interaction to thrive and during those last few months of school they were deprived of that. What have you learned?
