The Department of Education must prioritise assistance and resources for schools to provide online teaching and learning to children during current Level 5 restrictions, a Fine Gael Senator has said.
Senator Emer Currie has said more support is needed for parents to assist them if schoolwork is to continue when the majority of classrooms are closed.
Senator Currie said, “Most parents like me completely accept the decision to keep schools closed is needed to suppress the transmission of Covid-19 and that teachers and school communities will do their best to support students and parents. It is very welcome that Special Schools and Special Classes are to remain open.

Everyone should ensure they check into the Covid-19 Tracker App on their phones every day, a Fine Gael Senator has said.
Senator Garret Ahearn, from Tipperary, said, “We need to make sure that we are doing everything possible to stop the spread of Covid-19. This means taking personal responsibility by limiting the number of contacts we have”.
“But another simple way we can all take personal responsibility and play our part in preventing the spread of the virus is by helping to track and trace our close contacts by ensuring we check into the Covid-19 Tracker App each day.
Busy year for Irish Coast Guard highlights their vital role in saving lives

Figures from the Irish Coast Guard reminds us of the vital work they do to save lives on our coasts and that we must exercise great care in the water, a Fine Gael Senator has said.
Fine Gael Senator Barry Ward was speaking as figures from the Irish Coast Guard show its units responded to 1,270 callouts this year, with the Dún Laoghaire Coast Guard/RNLI in Senator Ward’s constituency responding to one in ten of these missions.

Time to deliver for takeaway cyclists

CYCLISTS and delivery workers for Deliveroo and Just Eat need to be made direct employees with guaranteed minimum working hours to ensure they have more certainty and entitlements, a Fine Gael Senator has said.
Mary Seery-Kearney, based in Dublin South Central, has called for more protections for young workers in the so-called gig economy.
“While food delivery cyclists have been a feature on our city’s roads for the last number of years, they became a lifeline for many during lockdown and at various stages of Covid restrictions.
“Cyclists for Deliveroo and Just Eat became essential workers, providing round the clock takeaway meals for people confined to their homes or locality.

Clare’s Fine Gael Senator is calling on officials in the Department of Health to give people a break from COVID-19 this Christmas.
Senator Martin Conway is urging officials NOT to release daily COVID figures on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day.
Speaking in recent weeks, he said he feels that people simply need a reprieve over the festive period.
