Biden’s oil and gas ban harms the environment, economy | Letter

My name is Shakira Jackson and I’m a student at the University of Pittsburgh. I am also an environmentalist and activist for liberty.
I am very worried about President Biden’s ban on new oil and gas leases. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the U.S. has achieved energy independence for the first time since 1952. This is essential because it means we don’t have to rely on countries with fewer environmental or human rights standards for energy. However, with President Biden’s order that could be reversed very soon.
Michelle Pugliese moved to Asheville on a blustery day in November 2007 and the next morning needed to see for herself the famed mountain known as the Roan, where the mighty Appalachian Trail travels through Mitchell County.
“I fell in love with the Roan the first time I saw it. I had no idea as I was driving up to Carvers Gap that I was driving by this property,” said Pugliese, land protection director for the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy.
The Asheville-based nonprofit land trust recently transferred 91 acres, known as the Roan Mountain Gateway, to the U.S. Forest Service, adding to public lands just south of the intensely popular Carvers Gap area on the North Carolina and Tennessee border.

Visitation to national park and public lands exploded last summer and fall, as people clamored to get away safely, and spend time outdoors. Yellowstone National Park had its busiest September on record, with a 21 percent increase from the previous September. Great Smoky Mountains National Park â already the countryâs most-visited national park â logged more than 1.5 million visits in August, a nearly 10 percent jump from the same month in 2019.
