Safe & Healthy Big Bend hosts virtual memorial to honor Leon County residents lost to COVID-19 and last updated 2021-04-13 17:35:05-04 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — At the one-year anniversary of the first local COVID-19 death, a group of community leaders will come together to commemorate the lives that have been lost and provide words of hope for the days ahead. Leaders from the faith community, education, law enforcement, health care and local government will gather virtually on Friday, April 16 at noon to share their stories from the pandemic. The public is invited to virtually attend the memorial – and it will be recorded for broad access by residents after the live event.

Proposed commercial development project will require demolishing former Lexington church building

The Dispatch A proposed commercial development project on Cotton Grove Road in Lexington will mean saying goodbye to a nearly 75-year-old church building that will be torn down to make room for new retail, restaurant and office buildings. The Lexington City Council approved by consent Monday night the issuance of a major zoning permit that will allow a Charlotte-based commercial development company to move forward with its plans to purchase the former Fairmont Presbyterian Church property at 1502 Cotton Grove Road. Once purchased, the development company will build two commercial buildings on the property after the church is demolished,  The current owners are listed as Fairmont Presbyterian Church and Jan Shuler.

Larry Allan Barnes Jr , 69, former scoutmaster with Boy Scouts of America

Larry Allan Barnes Jr. WILMINGTON Mr. Larry Allan Barnes Jr., 69, died Thursday, March 4, 2021. He was the beloved husband of Joni Lewis Barnes for 34 years. He was born Dec. 12, 1951, in Wilmington to Larry Allan Sr. and Rose Pargeter Barnes. Larry was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy. He served with distinction during the Vietnam War, in Vietnam and other Asian countries. He was honorably discharged, then returned to Wilmington. He began working as a marine surveyor, then started his own successful marine surveying company, inspecting ships and cargoes at major ports along the Atlantic coast. He retired in 2018. After his family, dogs and cats, his greatest joy was serving as scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America Troop 237. He led the troop for more than 10 years, with several of his scouts achieving the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, achieving the Vigil rank, which is the highest.
