Northland District Health Board and the Ministry of Health have been investigating options since 2015, with the health board wanting a $572 million replacement of the main hospital block. Chairman Harry Burkhardt​ said the Government had already agreed to the redevelopment, and he did not believe the health reforms would compromise the project, set to be built in three to five years.
