Jim Weatherly first gained notice as a University of Mississippi football player, and then as a hit songwriter. And his love for the game led to his greatest success in music, involving first a young Farrah Fawcett and ultimately a legendary recording of his tune Midnight Train to Georgia by Gladys Knight and the Pips. Weatherly, who also wrote songs for Ray Price, Glen Campbell, Kenny Rogers and others, died Wednesday at his home in Brentwood, Tennessee, near Nashville, family friend Charlie Monk told the Tennessean newspaper.

Wise Music Group has purchased the Marquis, Verulam and Mistletoe Melodies music publishing companies from The Bocu Group, in the process acquiring publishing rights to the works of influential rock band The Zombies. Included in the purchase are several tracks written by The Zombies Rod Argent, including the Hot 100 No. 2 hit She s Not There from the group’s 1964 debut album Begin Here and the tracks Tell Her No, Care of Cell 44 and Time of the Season from their 1968 masterpiece  Odessey and Oracle. The sale also includes This Will Be Our Year and “Hold Your Head Up” (both penned by band member Chris White) and God Gave Rock and Roll to You,” a song performed by Argent’s post-Zombies band Argent (written by that group’s Russ Ballard and later covered by Kiss).

The song’s co-writer, Lee Thomas Miller, brought up the photos in a conversation with Jamey Johnson. A lightbulb immediately went off for both songwriters, and once they finally got in a room together (along with James Otto), a modern country classic was born.
