Washington [US], February 5 (ANI): Musician Jim Weatherly, best known for writing 1970s hit Midnight Train to Georgia, has passed away at the age of 77.
According to Fox News, Weatherly was a singer-songwriter in his own right, notably working in the pop and country genres, but was also known for the songs he penned for other artists, including Midnight Train to Georgia for Glady Knight & The Pips.
The 76-year-old soul legend Gladys Knight tweeted about her late friend on Thursday (local time). I m missing Jim Weatherly already. He was about life and love, she said.
that his family attributes his death to natural causes.
There s an unexpected twist to the journey Weatherly took in writing Midnight Train to Georgia. It began with a 1970 phone call to a friend, actor Lee Majors, whose then girlfriend, Farah Fawcett, answered the phone. Weatherly told the newsletter for Ole Miss, where he d been a star quarterback, that he originally called the song Midnight Plane to Houston,
inspired by something Fawcett told him. During the course of the conversation, she mentioned she was packing her clothes and she was going to take the midnight plane to Houston to visit her family. Midnight plane to Houston got kind of stuck in my mind in bold letters. When I got off the phone, I wrote Midnight Plane to Houston in about 30 to 45 minutes.

Jim Weatherly, a former star quarterback at the University of Mississippi who moved to Nashville and authored megahits such as Midnight Train to Georgia in a prolific career as a singer-songwriter, died at his home Wednesday, Music Row mogul and family friend Charlie Monk told the Tennessean. He was 77.
The family attributed his death to natural causes, Monk said.
There will be a private service.
Weatherly helped lead the Ole Miss football team to an undefeated season, an SEC championship and a national championship in 1962 one of three national championships claimed by the program. The Rebels repeated as SEC champions with Weatherly at quarterback in 1963.
