Guwahati, Dec 28 (IANS): The Assam government introduced a Bill in the Assembly on Monday to shut over 600 madrasas run by it, which was strongly opposed by the opposition Congress and AIUDF.
Assam Education and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma introduced the Assam Madrassas Education (Provincialisation) Act of 1995 on the opening day of the three-day Winter Session. Once the Bill is passed (by the House), the practice of running madrasas by the government in Assam will come to an end, a practice which was started by the Muslim League government in pre-Independence Assam, Sarma said in a tweet.

Assam Education and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma introducing the bill in the assembly, said: The objective to introduce the bill the Assam Repealing bill 2020 would repeal of the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialisation) Act 1995 and the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialisation of services of employees and re-organisation of Madrassa Educational Institutions) Act 2018.
Assam to enact law to protect people from micro loan harassment

Guwahati, Dec 28 : The Assam government on Monday moved a bill in Assembly to protect people belonging to economically vulnerable groups from undue hardship of interest rates and coercive means of recovery by micro finance institutions or money lending agencies.
The Assam Micro Finance Institutions (Regulation of Money Lending) bill, 2020, tabled in the opening day of the 3-day winter session of the Assembly, stipulates that lenders shall ensure that a borrower does not have existing loans from not more than two lenders and the current cumulative loan outstanding shall not exceed Rs 1.25 lakhs.
The Assam government on Monday introduced a Bill in the assembly seeking to protect economically vulnerable groups and individuals from the hardship of usurious interest rates and coercive means of recovery by micro finance institutions or money lending agencies. Tabling The Assam Micro Finance Institutions (Regulation of Money Lending) Bill, 2020, on the first day of the Winter Session of the assembly, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that it proposes to create an effective mechanism to regulate the micro finance institutions or money lending agencies or organisations . On December 13, the Assam Cabinet had approved the proposal to reign in the micro finance entities that mostly give loans to women self help groups (SHG) at high rates.

GUWAHATI: Assam’s BJP-led coalition government introduced a bill in the Assembly on Monday to convert the state-run madrassas into general educational institutes with effect from the next financial year.
The Assam Repealing Bill, 2020 seeks to repeal the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialization) Act, 1995 and the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialization of Services of Employees and Re-Organisation of Madrassa Educational Institutions) Act, 2018.
