DARTMOUTH Nursing students at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth may have missed out on a conventional curriculum this year, but what they gained in experience is invaluable.
Mark W. Gregg, a junior at UMD, has helped out at testing sites and vaccination clinics around the SouthCoast as part of his community health class, administering over 150 vaccines at the VF Outlet in Dartmouth and the Liberal Club in Fall River. For his clinical, he helped out at a local site for eight hours every Tuesday, resulting in an average total of 70 hours for the semester. While we missed out on some opportunities, we were blessed with the other side, Gregg said.
State DPH identifies services Baystate Health must address before closing Mary Lane Outpatient Center in Ware

The Springfield-based provider has been asked to respond in early May.
Baystate Health plans to close the emergency department by June and shutter the facility completely within two years.
In an April 16 letter to Baystate Health, the state DPH says they have 15 days from receipt of the notification to respond. The department oversees requests when a provider wants to close a hospital or eliminate essential services,
“The plan the Hospital submits to the Department will be reviewed to determine if it appropriately assures access to the essential services in question following the plans to close the Satellite Emergency Facility and discontinue other hospital-based services at Baystate Mary Lane Outpatient Center,” the state DPH wrote.
Leon County vaccine rollout is following a national trend, with a dramatic dip in people wanting to get vaccinated. Now, it means less access to the vaccine.
Leon County will host a free COVID-19 pop-up vaccination clinic from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Through a partnership between local government, COVID-19 task forces, and community health centers, the pop-up clinic will be at Truth Gatherers Dream Center Church, 1317 High Road.
The clinic will offer both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to all eligible adults with no appointment needed, a press release said.
Vaccines will be administered by healthcare experts from Bond Community Heath Center and Neighborhood Medical Center, the press release said. In the event of inclement weather, vaccinations will continue onsite in the church.
The event is supported in part by the Leon County Coronavirus Vaccination Community Education and Engagement Task Force, which has focused on reducing distrust of the COVID-19 vaccines in minority communities and distributing information about the vaccines.
