   A Monument Health nurse prepares the first Pfizer vaccines for emergency room physicians who treat COVID-19 patients. Dr. Steve Dick is the first to receive the vaccine in Rapid City. Dick is the director of Emergency Medicine at Monument Health. He s wanted to get the vaccine in solidarity with the ER team and all they’ve gone through since March. “I got in my car, to drive here, and it really hit,” Dick says. “This is monumental. What a momentous occasion. The tide is changing, so to speak. Again, want to represent an amazing team of frontliners who, every day, have put themselves in harm’s way to be there.”

December 14, 2020 RAPID CITY, S.D. It’s been in the making for nine months. “I get in my car to drive here and it really hit, the weight of it, that this is monumental,” said Dr. Steve Dick, the Director of Emergency Medicine at Monument Health. “What a momentous occasion.” On Monday afternoon, that goal came true. He was the first person to be vaccinated in this half of the state, something he certainly isn’t taking lightly.

The first shipments of the COVID-19 vaccine have arrived in all three Siouxland States. Siouxland District Health says Woodbury County will receive almost 2,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine in the next few days for front-line health care workers.  Director Kevin Grieme admits the vaccine will only cover about 50% initially needed. Other doses will come in phases and the national pharmacy network will distribute additional doses to long-term care facilities. When the vaccine by Moderna gets the go-ahead there will be 400 doses for EMS workers in Woodbury County. Dakota County isn’t scheduled to receive the vaccine yet.  But, when it does, health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities and staff will get top priority.  The vaccine is estimated to be available to the general public in April.
