FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Interior COVID-19 cases are spiking - and with Fairbanks nearly last in vaccination rates, doctors at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital (FMH) are worried that this trend could mean big trouble for the city. Emergency Physician, Mark Simon, said the number of COVID-19 patients in FMH is near its peak. “I worked some shifts last weekend and definitely noticed an uptick in cases. More people coming in with COVID,” he said. “It’s sad to see. We are definitely seeing a surge here.”

FNSB has sharp spike in Covid-19 cases

Fairbanks North Star Borough saw a sharp spike in new Covid-19 cases this week while the state upward trend slowed. “We’ve seen some outrageous numbers,” said Fairbanks borough Chief of Staff Jim Williams. “They were outrageous in a sense that on Wednesday we saw over a hundred new cases — our third highest number.” On Thursday, only 32 new people contracted the virus across the borough and on Wednesday Fairbanks was leading the state in new cases, according to reports from the Department of Health and Social Services. The city reported 70 new cases on Wednesday while North Pole reported 34, and two more were registered somewhere else in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. With more than 27 cases per 100,000 people in the borough, only Mat-Su is doing worse.

Local governments could see more than $25 million in Covid relief funds

The three local governments in the Fairbanks area are expecting almost $30 million — maybe more — from the latest federal coronavirus relief bill signed into law last month. The Fairbanks North Star Borough is anticipating receiving $18-20 million, while the city of Fairbanks is anticipating receiving $6.41 million. It’s not yet clear how much will be allocated to the city of North Pole, which requested $8.7 million, mostly to improve the municipal water system, according to Mayor Mike Welch. Officials at the city of Fairbanks and the borough said they are waiting on guidance from the U.S. treasury department before deciding how their allocations will be used.

Many Alaska hospitals have relaxed their COVID-19 visitor restrictions

Print article A year into the coronavirus pandemic, many Alaska hospitals have now at least partially loosened COVID-19 visitor restrictions. While policies have varied by facility and region, most now permit at least one visitor per patient a shift from most of last year, when family visitations were largely barred to prevent coronavirus spread. Families of patients in Alaska this past year have described how difficult and uncertain it could feel to be separated from their hospitalized loved ones, relying on calls from hospital staff for updates, and in some cases, not being able to be present when their family member died.
