Woman in hospital after stabbing in Mayfield
A woman is in a serious condition after an alleged stabbing at a café near Newcastle.
About 2.35pm today (Wednesday 12 May 2021), emergency services were called to a café on Maitland Road, Mayfield, after reports a 27-year-old woman had been stabbed to the chest region.
She has been taken to John Hunter Hospital under police escort in a serious condition.
A 23-year-old man was arrested nearby a short time later.
He has been taken to Newcastle Police Station where he is currently assisting police with their inquiries.
Officers from Newcastle City Police District have established a crime scene and have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

International police investigation thwarts heroin imports destined for NSW and WA
An international police investigation has foiled attempts by an organised crime syndicate to import approximately 74.5 kilograms of heroin from China to New South Wales and Western Australia.
The Australian Federal Police investigation began last month (April 2021) after the National Narcotics Control Commission (NNCC) and the Guangdong Narcotics Control Board (NCB) in China intercepted multiple suspicious consignments destined for Australia.
When they examined the consignments, they allegedly found 254 blocks of ‘half-catti’ Double UOGlobe-branded heroin vacuum sealed in foil bags, and notified the AFP Guangzhou Office.
The illicit drugs were removed and replaced with an inert substance before four consignments were forwarded to their intended destinations – three in Newcastle, NSW, and one to Perth in Western Australia.

Police charge man with attempted murder at Newcastle
A man will face court today charged with attempted murder after a domestic-related stabbing in Newcastle yesterday.
About 6.30pm (Friday 9 April 2021), emergency services responded to a unit on William Street, Jesmond, after reports a 34-year-old woman had been stabbed by a man known to her.
Police were told the pair were arguing when the 38-year-old man allegedly stabbed the woman before she fled seeking assistance from neighbours.
The woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital where she underwent surgery and remains in a critical condition.
