An environmental review of a controversial boatyard expansion in Mattituck may soon get underway.
At a meeting Monday, the Southold Town Planning Board approved the final scope, a document required as part of the State Environmental Quality Review Act that spells out what aspects of the project must be further studied before it’s approved or denied.
The board voted 4-0 to accept the final scope, with chairman Donald Wilcenski recused.
“This is a major project,” Planning Board vice chair James Rich said during Monday’s meeting, adding that he thought the final document, which is nearly 30 pages long, is “very complete.”
A peek at the design
A development team for 5 World Trade Center (5 WTC) has been selected by the Port Authority of NY and NJ. The board voted unanimously during their monthly public meeting to award the bid to Silverstein Properties, Brookfield Properties, Omni New York, and Dabar Development. The board also offered up a snapshot of the design, which comes from none other than Kohn Pedersen Fox. Residents in Rome are seeking to preserve the former West Rome School building a structure they say is historic from being torn down to make way for a car wash.
Hoffmann Development of Albany is looking to build a 6,400-square-foot car wash on the 1.93-acre site at 1315 Erie Boulevard West. The proposal, which is making its way through Rome’s Planning Board, would include three queuing lanes for the car wash and 13 vacuum parking spaces, according to board documentation.
The possible destruction of the former school house does not sit well with numerous city residents, including local resident Bill Rapke, who started a petition to save the building. The petition is in the process of being presented to the Planning Board.

At its meeting on Jan. 16, the New Scotland Zoning Board of Appeals approved an area variance that allows a proposed solar array to be built on a 27-acre parcel of land located between 215 Altamont Road and National Grid’s high-voltage transmission lines.
NEW SCOTLAND The New Scotland Zoning Board of Appeals at its January meeting approved a variance that will allow 20 acres of solar panels to be installed on an addressless parcel of land along Altamont Road.
The project now moves to the town’s planning board for site-plan approval.
Borrego Solar Systems, a California-based company with a local office in Latham, is planning to install a five-megawatt large-scale, ground-mounted, solar array on a vacant 27-acre site owned by New Scotland resident Steven Burke that is located in between 215 Altamont Road and National Grid’s high-voltage transmission lines.
