Wilton s historic Gregory Home eyed as possible location for development

WILTON Developers are looking to build a luxury multifamily development on the site of the historic Gregory Home in Wilton, according to tentative plans submitted to the town.
A team from Continental Global Ventures LLC and an attorney representing them presented their plans for 2-24 Pimpewaug Road to the Planning and Zoning Commission last month. Days later, on May 4, the town’s Historic District and Historic Property Commission expressed concern with the rhetoric surrounding the proposal.

LANSING, MICH. This week the 2021 Governor’s Awards for Historic Preservation honored the preservation work behind five Michigan historical landmarks, ranging from a lighthouse in Northeast Michigan to Detroit’s Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, the birthplace of the Model T car.
According to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), the program, now in its 18th year, celebrates “outstanding historic preservation achievements that reflect a commitment to the preservation of Michigan’s unique character and the many archaeological sites and historic structures that document our rich past.” The 2021 awards were given out during a virtual ceremony hosted by the State Historic Preservation

Winthrop Maine Historical Society will host Michael Goebel-Bain, the national register and survey coordinator for the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 13. A business meeting will follow.

The Winthrop resident will provide a broad overview of the national register program as it is administered in Maine. He will cover eligible property types, eligibility criteria, the process for listing a property, and the benefits and restrictions on listed properties. He will include basic information on what the commission does. National register listed properties in Winthrop will be included as examples.
The commission is an independent agency within the executive branch of state government that functions as the State Historic Preservation Office. The office administers the programs of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 in Maine, which includes the identification, evaluation, and protection

Fines, fees and mandatory surcharges can turn even a minor parking or traffic ticket into a costly affair that can quickly spiral out of control.
A story in Sunday’s Star Tribune by Jessie Van Berkel details how a $30 ticket for expired license tabs can quickly mushroom to $130, thanks to a hefty “state surcharge” that eclipses the cost of the ticket itself, along with a $15 fee charged in some areas to support law libraries. And that is if the fines are paid on time. Delay adds late fees.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - A special ceremony is planned Tuesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the start of the Freedom Rides, a movement that eventually ended segregation in interstate travel.
It was May 4, 1961, when the first Freedom Ride left Washington, DC. That CORE group of riders, CORE stands for Congress of Racial Equality, was headed to New Orleans. The group was attacked in Anniston and Birmingham before the Kennedy Administration got involved and flew them on to New Orleans.
