Smith Governor Mills Presents Economics Bond Package Aimed at Fixing Roads and Bridges and Land Conservation In Honor of Maine Sportsman George A. Smith May 7, 2021 Governor Janet Mills today presented a bond proposal aimed at rebuilding Maine’s transportation system and conserving lands and waters in honor of famed Maine sportsman George A. Smith, who passed away in February after a long and courageous battle with ALS. The proposal dedicates $100 million to maintain and upgrade Maine’s transportation system through the Maine Department of Transportation, and, in honor of George Smith, it also dedicates $40 million over four years to conserve lands and waters for Maine people through the Land for Maine’s Future (LMF) Program.

The Great Recession gave rise to an innovative model for meeting Maine’s food needs with local resources. The number of residents experiencing hunger had grown markedly by 2010 just as donations of shelf-stable foods declined due to increased efficiencies in the grocery trade. After importing travel-weary produce from farms out West, Good Shepherd Food Bank attempted to meet the growing demand with supply from struggling Maine farmers. Kristen Miale, who now leads Good Shepherd, recalled that the food bank’s staff then “did something incredibly smart; they approached farmers to ask, ‘How can we design this so it works for you?’”
