A significant savings opportunity when couples purchase long-term care insurance protection is about to disappear.
Insurance companies continually change how they price policies. At one time, insurers charged men and women equal amounts for identical long-term care insurance protection. Starting around 2013, this policy changed as insurers found that women were far more likely to need care and utilize the benefits. Today, women pay anywhere from 20% to 40% more than men.
As an inducement for couples to both purchase coverage, insurers have offered spousal or partner discounts. These typically amount to a 30% savings when both partners apply and are insured or 15% when only one spouse is covered.

Springwell grab-and-go hot lunches
The center is now offering hot “grab and go” lunches Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays in collaboration with Springwell. To reserve a hot lunch, residents must call the Senior Center at 617-730-2747 two business days in advance. There will be no admission to the Senior Center for any reason at the time of pickup. Those who are not feeling well and/or have a temperature of 100 degrees or higher should stay home and contact their physician. Face coverings (i.e., scarf, mask, bandana) are required when picking up the meal. Residents will be required to follow the directions provided by staff and volunteers at the time of arrival. The findings of a new study of long-term care insurance policy claims should be shared with married couples urges the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance (AALTCI). With so many couples, there s often one spouse who is resistant, usually the husband, explains Jesse Slome, director of the long-term care insurance organization. This new information will help those who have doubts understand the significant consequences and the benefits of this important protection.
Slome was sharing data from a recently released study by Milliman Actuarial. When one spouse has a long-term care claim, the odds of a claim by the second spouse is four times higher than would normally be expected, Slome shared with a group of long-term care insurance sales professionals. Data comes from Milliman s Is Your Spouse Contagious study.
