CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – The Blue Ridge Health District starting Tuesday will be closing down the KMart parking COVID vaccination site, and move it to the 100,000 square foot JC Penney store at Fashion Square Mall. In a Wednesday afternoon press conference, BRHD’s Ryan McKay said they are also starting tomorrow (3/18) exclusively using the CDC’s Vaccination Administration Management System or VAMS for all its COVID appointments.
McKay says the tent at the old KMart set up with the financing and help of Dave Matthews’ BamaWorks has served well as a quick set-up of a large vaccination operation, but there are space challenges. He says the JC Penney location has plenty of room for spacing, more vaccinators (as many as 30 working at a time), and post-vaccination observation. At large volume times, they’ve had to have some during observation seated outside. He says this space also has room to grow.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - The Blue Ridge Health District (BRHD) will soon be vaccinating folks in Phase 1a and 1b inside the former J.C. Penney in Fashion Square Mall.
“We’ve recognized the need to expand and grow as we anticipate a larger allocation of vaccine in the coming weeks and months,” BRHD COVID-19 Incident Commander Ryan McKay said.
The current vaccination clinic located in the parking lot of the former Kmart in Albemarle County is set to close Friday, March 19.
The number of people hospitalized in western Virginia for complications related to COVID-19 continues to drop.
The hospitals that serve the New River and Roanoke Valleys as well as the Lynchburg, Danville, and Martinsville areas reported 137 hospitalized COVID patients Wednesday. That’s down from 162 last week and nearly 250 a month ago.

At Lynchburg General Hospital, the drop in community cases and hospitalizations means fewer resources and space are needed for COVID-related care. The hospital’s vice president of medical affairs said Wednesday morning just 18 beds are currently set aside for COVID-related patients.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Blue Ridge Health District (BRHD) is urging you to pre-register now, whether you qualify for the COVID-19 vaccine or not.
âIt doesnât matter what age range you fall into, or what your employment might be, or what health conditions you might have. Anybody whoâs interested in getting the vaccine at some point can go ahead right now and should go ahead right now and pre-register for their COVID-19 vaccine,â BRHD spokesperson Jason Elliott said.
