Asthma Drug Hastens Recovery in COVID-19 Patients by Angela Mohan on April 26, 2021 at 5:06 PM
Inhaled budesonide can enhance recovery in COVID-19 patients aged over 50, according to a study.
Early treatment with inhaled budesonide cut recovery time by a median of three days in COVID-19 patients at higher risk of more severe illness, said researchers from the University of Oxford.
The findings, from the preliminary trial, showed 32 per cent of those taking budesonide recovered within the first 14 days of treatment, compared with 22 per cent in the usual care group. They also reported greater well being after 2 weeks.
The study has found evidence that a relatively cheap, widely available drug with very few side effects helps people at higher risk of worse outcomes from Covid-19 recover quicker, stay better once they feel recovered, and improve their wellbeing , said Chris Butler, Professor of primary care at the university s Nuffield Department of Primar
Leading scientists are calling on the Government to remove all coronavirus restrictions and allow people to ‘take back control of their own lives’ when the ‘roadmap’ to freedom ends in June.
With real-world data showing vaccines reduce the risk of death by 98 per cent and hospitalisations by more than 80 per cent, the experts say Covid-19 is being turned into a ‘mild’ disease in Britain, akin to the flu.
In an open letter to The Mail on Sunday, they criticise ‘confused and contradictory’ messages from Ministers and scientific advisers about the virus, which they say are exaggerating the real threat.
The signatories of the letter include Carl Heneghan - Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford

When will Britain s coronavirus epidemic be deemed officially over?
At a recent select committee, Prof Dame Angela McLean, the chief scientific adviser at the Ministry of Defence, said experts were crying out for some clarity on how many deaths would be considered acceptable so life could get back to normal.
