How To Improve Food Security And Nutritional Outcomes

Representational Image How To Improve Food Security And Nutritional Outcomes Food security and nutrition in India have worsened since the last NFHS round with 18 states showing worsened stunting levels among children under five. The findings of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) (IIPS, 2019-20) have come as a reality check, and even experts are trying to make sense of it. The survey shows that food security and nutrition in India have worsened since the last NFHS round (2015-16). Among the 22 states and Union Territories (UTs) for whom the data was released, 18 show either stagnation or worsening of stunting (height-for-age) levels among children less than five years.

Op-Ed: Car Dependency is An Unequal Burden

For example, thousands of automobiles regularly line up to receive food bank packages, as illustrated in the photo above. These are mostly nice SUVs, light trucks and vans, the types of vehicles owned by responsible families living in automobile-dependent communities. Automobile food bank lines are, to a large degree, a self-fulfilling prophesy: Because residents must drive everywhere, they have high transportation costs, leaving inadequate money for other essentials like food, shelter and healthcare, which forces them to depe

The RBI’s ‘weighty’ food problem The weight of food has skewed inflation control policy   -  V V Krishnan× The food articles’ high weight and their price volatility have reduced the efficacy of the central bank’s policy actions The flexible inflation targeting framework adopted by RBI in 2016 is considered a significant economic reform in India post 2000. Under this framework, maintaining a 4 per cent CPI headline inflation gets the highest priority in the hierarchy of monetary policy objectives. This rule based policy making renders monetary policy transparent and predictable. However, of late, adoption of this framework is being criticised on many accounts. Many experts believe that such single minded monetary policy making is not suitable for an emerging country like India. They indirectly hold this framework responsible for accelerating the slow-down of the Indian economy.

Consumer Spending Before And After The Pandemic

Consumer Spending Before And After The Pandemic  Share   Share Trending How much, and on what, was the average American household spending in a year before the coronavirus pandemic? The Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX) for 2019 provides the most definitive answer to that question, which we can compare with the previous 35 years worth of annual data to see how consumer spending has changed over time. Produced as a joint product of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau, the CEX compiles the information collected through tens of thousands of surveys, diaries and interviews submitted by U.S. households, or consumer units as the BLS data jocks affectionately call them, which provides a tremendous amount of insight into how Americans allocate their limited resources.

Automobile Dependency: An Unequal Burden

Automobile Dependency: An Unequal Burden Automobile-dependent planning has changed automobiles from a luxury into a necessity. Excessive vehicle costs leave many households without money to purchase essential food, shelter and healthcare. They need more affordable transportation options.
