‘We hope this initiative will help Nutri-Score to rethink’: Olive oil makers launch awards in response to ‘penalising’ FOP labelling By Oliver Morrison Europe’s olive oil industry is railing against the ‘unfair’ Nutri-Score algorithm and has launched the first international awards to assess the health benefits and flavour of olive oils in the hope the food labelling scheme will review its assessment criteria.
Nutri-Score classifies food and beverages according to their nutritional profile using a scale of five colours and letters (A is green to represent the best nutritional quality while E is dark orange to show it’s the lowest).

Scientists rally behind Nutri-Score in response to scepticism in Spain: ‘These attacks are based on personal opinion, not science’ By Flora Southey In the countdown to Spain’s national implementation of Nutri-Score, the labelling scheme has encountered ‘attacks’ in traditional and social media, says Professor Jordi Salas-Salvadó from Rovira I Virgili University.
According to Spain’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs, nutrition labelling scheme Nutri-Score is due to rollout across the country in the first four months of 2021.
The scheme ranks food from -15 for the ‘healthiest’ products to +50 for those that are ‘less healthy’. Based on this score, the product receives a letter with a corresponding colour code: from dark green (A) to dark red (F).
JDigital and media association AMI appeal Spanish ad restrictions

Spanish operator association JDigital and media association la Asociación de Medios e Información (AMI) have both submitted appeals to the country’s Supreme Court, challenging the controversial advertising regulations that were brought in last year.
Last year, Spain introduced a series of tight restrictions on advertising gambling. In February, gambling advertising on radio and television was limited to between the hours of 1:00AM and 5:00AM. Additional restrictions on online and direct advertising were then put in place in April, initially on a temporary basis before being put in the permanent regulations put before the European Commission.
Spanish Ministry prepares new safer gambling regulations

Spain’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs is to launch a public consultation on a new draft Royal Decree designed to make the country’s online gambling market safer and fairer for consumers, especially young people.
The decree, Minister for Consumer Affairs Alberto Garzón explained, will set out standards for action, intervention, control, prevention, awareness raising and treatment to safeguard players.
It will also look to ensure operators are collecting the necessary player data to protect their players, as well as expanding the range of information shared with customers.
