Students rally for full divestment commitment from NU Board of Regents

Joined together near the Broyhill Fountain, students urged University of Nebraska administrators to commit to full divestment. Aila Ganic and Madison Whitney, Sustain UNL’s president and vice president, respectively, and Divest NU organizers, presented three demands to the university. These include a call on the NU Board of Regents to commit to full divestment of its controlled funds by its August meeting, pass a resolution calling on the NU Foundation to fully divest by the end of the year and create a university-wide working group — that would include students — dedicated to the implementation of divestment and reinvestment in clean energy.

UNL organizations try to alleviate stress in a no-break semester

Instead of having the opportunity to take a few days off from classes to simply relax and enjoy the spring air, students have had to endure the semester without any breaks.  In an effort to compensate for the lack of a spring break, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Big Red Resilience & Well-being held a Spring Breakout festival on March 29 where students had a few hours to enjoy a festival at the Nebraska Union Plaza.  Although some people were able to attend the event and relax for a while, other students did not have the opportunity to be there. Classes were not canceled that day, so students would not have been able to attend if they had class at that time.

ASUN 2020-21 administration to vote on final bills of their term

The 2020-21 Association of Students of the University of Nebraska administration will be voting on the final bills of its term at the weekly meeting Wednesday night before the transition to the 2021-22 administration.  If Government Bill 41 passes, ASUN will allocate up to $4,250 to the Student Organic Farm from the 2020-21 ASUN Green Fund budget. Additionally, the bill calls on the leaders of the farm to give a report to ASUN following the completion of the project.  The Student Organic Farm, located on East Campus, allows students to connect, learn and grow food, according to the farm’s website. If Government Bill 42 passes, ASUN will continue to work with the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor to advocate for transparency in student fees for the 2021-22 academic year as well as future years. ASUN would create a webpage under the Student Fees tab of its website that would directly link to the new Executive Vice Chancellor website that strives to underline all man

UNL admissions team gets ready for the return of in-person visits

Most current University of Nebraska-Lincoln students were able to walk past the Broyhill Fountain north of the Nebraska Union, touch the foot of Archie the mammoth and stand in the shadow of Memorial Stadium before deciding to become a Husker.   Now, many new students have only been able to interact with admissions digitally, forcing them to make a life changing decision without actually ever touring their new home or meeting face-to-face with UNL staff.  The UNL Office of Admissions and New Student Enrollment staff have worked throughout the year to make the process as normal and helpful as possible for prospective students, according to Director of Admissions Abby Freeman and NSE Director Jennifer Brost.

ASUN passes 12 pieces of legislation in longest meeting of the year

In a meeting that lasted around 3 and half hours, the 2020-21 Association of Students of the University of Nebraska senate passed 12 pieces of legislation in the current administration’s final full meeting of the year.  Jake Johnson, associate to the chancellor for Institutional Equity and Compliance, spoke about the recent sexual misconduct training and answered questions brought up by senators. Johnson said he and his staff welcome the feedback.  “This particular training offered the opportunity for people to be engaged throughout the delivery of the program,” Johnson said.  The majority of the concerns and questions raised were regarding the process for choosing the program and the insensitivity of the program.
