The major snowstorm battering New Jersey with up to 2 feet of snow and wind gusts up to 50 mph has grounded more than 900 flights at the region’s airports including 345 cancellations at Newark Liberty International Airport alone, according to Flightaware.com.
Most airports on Monday morning urged travelers to confirm their flight status before leaving for the airport. The cancellations on arrivals and departures at Newark reflected nearly 75% of the total scheduled flights.

A powerful nor’easter is working its way across the East Coast on Monday, shutting down schools, vaccination sites and travel as it threatens to dump up to two feet of snow in parts of the region.
The winter storm will bring heavy snow and winds from Pennsylvania to Maine through Tuesday, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service. They expect a widespread snowfall of up to 8 inches.
“Snowfall rates may at times exceed 2”/hour,” the NWS said. “This intense snowfall combined with strong winds will create near blizzard conditions with extremely limited visibility, making travel difficult to impossible.”
When President Joe Biden repealed
the “Muslim ban” on his first day in office, many celebrated the end of a policy that had divided families, derailed visas and uprooted lives.
The reality, however, is that the xenophobic sentiment that many saw in the travel ban remains a raging problem in the United States, according to Muslims in New Jersey. Hate speech, bullying and bias crimes have soared during the Trump era, while Muslims in public office have faced repeated slurs and threats.
Montgomery resident Sadaf Jaffer, who became America’s first female Muslim mayor in 2019, knows this firsthand. As mayor, she faced bigoted speech daily, with strangers accusing her of being part of a Muslim invasion and infiltrating the government to impose Islamic law.
