Winter weather warnings remain in place through Tuesday. Newark Liberty International Airport had 71% of its departing and 80% of arrival flights canceled Monday, according to FlightAware. At JFK Airport, 72% of both departing and arriving flights were canceled and at LaGuardia, 91% of departing flights and 88% of arriving flights were canceled. In response to the storm, airlines are offering passengers the ability to change their flights for free. American Airlines, Delta,JetBlue and United have all issued travel waivers for travelers flying to select cities in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions through Feb. 2.

Most airports on Monday morning urged travelers to confirm their flight status before leaving for the airport. The cancellations on arrivals and departures at Newark reflected nearly 75% of the total scheduled flights.

The winter storm will bring heavy snow and winds from Pennsylvania to Maine through Tuesday, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service. They expect a widespread snowfall of up to 8 inches. “Snowfall rates may at times exceed 2”/hour,” the NWS said. “This intense snowfall combined with strong winds will create near blizzard conditions with extremely limited visibility, making travel difficult to impossible.”

The National Weather Service warned that widespread heavy snow of 1 to 2 feet is forecast from Pennsylvania into New England including Philadelphia, New York City and Boston through Tuesday, with snowfall rates reaching up to three inches an hour and wind gusts peaking as high as 60 mph. As of Monday morning, the nor’easter has pelted Chicago with about 11 inches of snow; Washington, D.C., with 2.3 inches; Philadelphia with 3.4 inches; and New York City with 3.5 inches.
