Patients Urged to Enroll in STEP for MS Trial Testing 2 Exercise Programs

Click here to subscribe to the Multiple Sclerosis News Today Newsletter! 4.7 (23) Adults with mild to moderate multiple sclerosis (MS) are being urged to participate in a new clinical trial STEP for MS that will assess the impact of two different exercise programs on patients’ mobility, walking abilities, and quality of life. Funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the STEP for MS trial expects to enroll around 400 MS patients, ages 18–65, who have difficulties walking and do not exercise regularly. STEP for MS is recruiting participants at eight sites across seven U.S. states. More information can be found here.

Fans ease breathing in people with advanced cancer

On the other hand, the researchers found medications, such as opioids, had limited impact in improving breathlessness. In a systematic review of 29 randomized clinical trials of breathlessness in 2,423 adults with advanced cancer, researchers found several nonpharmacological interventions were associated with improved breathlessness, including fan therapy and bilevel ventilation (air pressure delivered through a face mask covering the mouth and nose). The results appear in the journal “Breathlessness, or dyspnea, is a common and distressing symptom in patients with advanced cancer,” says Arjun Gupta, chief medical oncology fellow at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and lead author of the article.

Singh receives $7 6 million in research funding for rheumatoid arthritis study

The study is funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. Jasvinder Singh, M.D.Jasvinder Singh, M.D., has received $7.6 million from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to study the effectiveness of the two most commonly used drug classes for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The study will examine patients who do not respond to methotrexate, the first-line therapy for RA. The two drug classes researchers will focus on are biologics and targeted synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. Singh, professor of medicine in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’sDivision of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, and his team will compare how the drugs affect patient-reported outcomes with the hope of choosing the best course of treatment for the patient.
