VICTORIA Island Health announced Wednesday that a COVID-19 outbreak at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is now considered over, exactly two weeks after the outbreak was first declared. In total, seven people were affected by the outbreak at the hospital s High Intensity Rehab Unit, according to Island Health. Six patients and one staff member tested positive for the virus during the course of the outbreak, which spanned from April 14 to April 28. During that time, Island Health tighten up restrictions around the High Intensity Rehab Unit. Those restrictions have now been loosened, allowing for new admissions and transfers to return to the hospital unit.

The new case count has risen to the 1,000 mark once again.
In addition, hospitalizations have risen to a new record high above the 500 case mark, which B.C. provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry called “alarming”.
Consequently, the pressure on the B.C. healthcare system has prompted changes to surgeries, which B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix outlined at today s briefing (see below).

Hospitals and surgeries
Henry and Dix warned during their presentation on April 19, the high number of COVID-19 cases in the province has resulted in record levels of hospitalizations.
The seniors home and health authority are speaking with families. Enhanced cleaning and infection control measures are in place. Island Health says it is working with Craigdarroch administration and staff to identify anyone who may have been exposed. Admissions and transfers will be restricted while the outbreak is in effect. Social visitors are currently restricted and resident movement in the facility has been curtailed. Craigdarroch Care Home is a long-term care home owned and operated by Trillium Communities. There is also an outbreak in two of 16 residential houses at Mount St. Mary Hospital in Victoria and an outbreak Nanaimo Regional General Hospital in Nanaimo.
