For two semesters, from the September of 2013 to the April of 2014, Daystar University had a fascinating programme called the ‘Creative Academy,’ that was the brainchild of banker-writer Kinyanjui Kombani, now based at Stanchart in Singapore, and the unconventional academic Dr. Wanjia Njoya.
“Most literature courses are taught by academics who only know the theory of writing,” Kombani said. “We wanted a course where real life writers taught end-to-end writing, from the idea of literature to the process of publishing to marketing one’s own creativity .”
Indeed, the interest in this course was so strong that there was a woman from Kisumu taking the nightly bus from Kisumu to Nairobi, just to attend the classes at the Valley Road campus.
Larry Madowo Moves to CNN After Successful Stint at BBC
High flying Kenyan journalist Larry Madowo is leaving the BBC for a lucrative post at CNN in Nairobi.
The American cable news organization made the announcement Thursday morning. Madowo has been serving as BBC News’ North American correspondent. His stint there has seen him cover the US election, COVID-19 outbreak, the death of George Floyd and the trial of his killer among many other stories.
“Larry Madowo is leaving the BBC to take up a new position with CNN as the network’s Nairobi-based correspondent,” senior vice president of international newsgathering and managing editor (Europe, Middle East and Africa) Deborah Rayner made the announcement.

Kenyan journalist Larry Madowo has left the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and taken up a new position at the US-owned Cable News Network (CNN) as the Nairobi correspondent.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Deborah Rayner, Senior Vice President of International Newsgathering and Managing Editor, Europe, Middle East, and Africa, for CNN International.
Madowo has enjoyed a significant growth in his journalism career since joining Kenya Television Network (KTN) as an intern about a decade ago. He worked for NTV Kenya and CNBC Africa, where he anchored the business channel’s daily market shows Open Exchange, Power Lunch, and Closing Bell in Johannesburg.
