HC asks S Alam Group to pay Tk 5 lakh to each Banshkhali victim’s family Star file photo Star Digital Report Star Digital Report The High Court today directed S Alam Group, owner of SS Power I Plant of Banshkhali in Chattogram, to give Tk 5 lakh as initial cost to the family of each victim killed in police firing on April 17 this year. In response to two separate writ petitions, the HC asked the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Chattogram to submit their inquiry reports over the incident in 45 days. S Alam Group has also been ordered to submit a report on what measures it has taken to compensate the deceased s families and those who were injured and also for their treatments to the HC in 45 days.

Apex court upholds HC orders to stop activities of MAAR Ltd in Habiganj File photo/Collected Star Digital Report Star Digital Report The Supreme Court today upheld a High Court order that asked the government to stop the operations of Maizea Advance Agro Refinery (MAAR) Limited, a dry starch powder producing company, for polluting environment at Shahpur area in Habiganj s Madhabpur upazila. A six-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain dismissed a leave to appeal petition filed by MAAR Limited challenging the HC directive. Following a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela), the HC on March 15 this year ordered the government to immediately stop the functions of MAAR Limited.

The Appellate Division of the SC upheld a High Court order that on January 7, 2019 directed the local administration of Barguna to evict unauthorised structures from the boundaries of Bharani Khal. A full bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain came up with the order after hearing a leave to appeal petition filed by the government.
