Columnist Abul Maksud laid to rest Staff Correspondent 24th February, 2021 10:22:59 Eminent columnist, researcher, writer and journalist Syed Abul Maksud was laid to eternal rest in the capital’s Azimpur graveyard on Wednesday after Maghrib prayer. Earlier, the third and final namaz-e-janaza of the veteran intellectual was held at Dhaka University Central Mosque after Asr prayer while his second namaz-e-janaza was held on the National Press Club premises at around 2:45pm. A pall of gloom descended on the journalist community when the freezing van carrying Maksud’s body entered the club around 2:15pm. His friends and colleagues, and journalists and their professional organisations including National Press Club, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU), Dhaka Sub Editors’ Council (DSEC), Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), and Bangladesh Press Institute, among others, paid their last tribute to him there

January 26, 2021 Not virtually, Amar Ekushey Boi Mela-2021 will be held as usual from March 18 after a long delay due to the coronavirus pandemic. Habibullah Sirajee, director general of Bangla Academy, confirmed the date yesterday.  He said, “The book fair will start on March 18. I can’t say more at this moment.” “We will give details on the duration of the book fair. Many people were in confusion, so I am just confirming the date. “Our designers will make design of locations of the stalls, considering the coronavirus situation,” he added. Usually, the book fair begins on February 1 each year. The decision of holding the book fair at the usual venue was made earlier, but the date was not confirmed.

President mourns death of writer, novelist Rabeya Khatun 344 DHAKA, Jan 3, 2021 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Swadhinata Award and Ekushey Padak winning writer and novelist Rabeya Khatun, mother of noted media personality Faridur Reza Sagar. In a condolence message, the President said, “Rabeya Khatun’s death is an irreparable loss to country’s literary arena.” Recalling her contribution to promoting the Bengali literature, Abdul Hamid said she will always be remembered for her outstanding literary works. Rabeya Khatun breathed her last today at the age of 85. She has written over 50 novels and more than 400 short stories. Her works include essays, novels, research, short stories, religious history and travelogues.

Manzoor-e-Mawla no more Staff Correspondent Staff Correspondent Poet and former director general of Bangla Academy Manzoor-e-Mawla died with Covid-19 at a hospital in the capital yesterday. He was 80. He breathed his last at Dhaka s United Hospital around 11:00am, according to Bangla Academy s public relations department. He was buried in the afternoon at Azimpur Graveyard. Manzoor-e-Mawla, also a researcher on Rabindranath Tagore, was admitted to hospital on December 5 after testing positive for coronavirus. Mawla also served as secretary in various government ministries. He was director general of Bangla Academy from December 31, 1982 to March 3, 1986. He was among those who had a significant contribution in giving the monthlong Amar Ekushey Boi Mela an official shape and the vibrant attributes that have persisted till today.
