Smith County Commissioners Extend Disaster Declaration for another two weeks

TYLER, Texas Because of the ongoing nature of the winter weather event and expected countywide response efforts that will continue, the Commissioners Court voted Friday to extend the declaration beyond its original seven days.
“We know this week has been hard on everyone in Smith County, but we will make it through this, Smith County Judge Nathaniel Moran said. I encourage you to continue to look for opportunities to help those around you.

TYLER, Texas As of Tuesday morning, more than 146 shelters and warming stations opened throughout the state, including several in East Texas.
Many of these places encourage people to come with blankets, chargers, as well as something to sit on, and masks are required. People who need to use the warming centers are also encouraged to call ahead if possible to check for space.

The Pitser Garrison Convention Center will remain open as a cold-weather shelter for those without power through at least Thursday.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - For more than a decade, Jeff Warr has represented Precinct 1 on the Smith County Commissioners Court.
Warr attended his last court meeting as a commissioner on Tuesday morning, although his retirement isn’t effective until Dec. 31, 2020.
“I tell people (moving to Smith County) was really one of the greatest things that happened in my life,” Warr said in an interview with KLTV.

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The East Texas Food Bank plans to serve over 1000 families in the last drive-thru distributions of the year.
Friday, December 18
East Texas State Fairgrounds (2112 W. Front St) Enter off Front St.
Saturday, December 19
Green Acres Baptist Church (1607 Troup Hwy) Enter off Barbara St. from Troup Hwy
Food boxes with produce, protein and dairy will be distributed as well as prepacked meals from HEB
Both distributions are open to anyone and there are no eligibility or paperwork requirements. These are drive-thru distributions and walk-ups will not be accepted.
